Crafted by hand in the U.S.A., the Open Road Straw Hat combines high-quality 100% Shantung straw with a firm finish for the ultimate in warm-weather comfort and style. With its western-style crown and 2 ¾” bound-edge brim, the Open Road Straw easily transitions from country to city to beach—and looks equally sharp on a woman or a man.

Introduced in 1937, the Open Road was originally sold with an open crown, which could then be creased to the customer’s liking. Since 1948, it has been finished with a traditional, hand-pressed cattleman crease, and has been worn by modern pioneers and trailblazers ever since, from artists and outlaws to Presidents (including, most notably, LBJ, who was rarely photographed on his Texas ranch without his Open Road).

The Open Road Straw features a genuine leather sweatband and a 4 ¼” crown outfitted with a satin hat band.

true heritage

Our story begins in the 1860s, when John B. Stetson was prospecting for gold in the Colorado Rockies and, struck by a sudden rainstorm, quickly fashioned a felt hat for protection. The modern cowboy hat was born, and more than a century and a half later, John B.’s pioneering legacy and commitment to quality live on in everything we make.

legendary quality

From start to finish, our signature hats are made by hand in Texas, using only the finest materials and time-tested techniques, often utilizing the same machinery we’ve been using for decades. The result? The world’s most legendary hats, designed for the long haul and crafted to be passed on from one generation to the next.
